Internet Marketing Geek Speak

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Online marketers have a code, culture and vocabulary that is a foreign language to people who don’t live and breath Internet marketing geek speak.

A search marketer’s daily lexicon includes words about tactics and actions for sharing and virally spreading messages, building brands and helping rank websites on the front pages of search engines. Geek speak represents daily life online, our Internet marketing jargon and lingo used while participating in online communities.

Internet Marketing Geek Speak

Geek Speak for Tactics

Geek Speak relating to methods, or tactics,  for marketing and positioning a company’s products and services include some of the following:

Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Pay Per Click (PPC), Search Engine Marketing (SEM), Blogging, User Generated Content (UGC), Social Media Marketing (SMM), Social Media Optimization (SMO), Email Marketing, Affiliate Marketing, Social Networking, Reputation Management

Does online marketing have more acronyms than government work?

Translate and learn some of this lingo at MarketingTerms.com, an Internet marketing terms reference.

Geek Speak for Actions

Internet marketers, as well as customers and non-marketing types who surf the Web and/or buy products online, are all part of the process. Our actions become part of the marketing message. You may not know the word or term for what you are doing when you’re online, but when you are speaking about a product or service, your language becomes part of that company’s brand.

Geek speak for daily actions through which we share include:

Tweet, Stumble, Thumb, Sphinn, Digg, Post, Tag

  • Tweet - a message less than or equal to 140 characters posted on Twitter
  • Thumb - the act of giving a thumbs up or thumbs down to cast your vote on a website post, article, photo on StumbleUpon. People who look through StumbleUpon then Stumble upon sites for which others have voted.
  • Sphinn - voting approval or disapproval (desphinning) submissions made on Sphinn, the site where many in search marketing hang out to share stories
  • Digg - another “vote” of approval to say you like an article
  • Post - creating an article for a blog, a blog post
  • Tag - adding a keyword to posts or inserting words into a tweet or bookmarking a site with tags (Delicious)

These terms relate to participation on social networks, also known as “socnets.”

SEO Code of Ethics – Join the Effort!

Friday, August 29th, 2008

UPDATED: 09.18.08

I’m no longer “actively active” in the effort for an SEO Code of Ethics (other than with the team I work to provide services). Ethics is a personal matter and cannot be legislated. (Standards or regulation was not the point in the first place.) My hope was that a team could develop and accept a common SEO Code of Ethics that consumers could reference to understand when they are being snake-oiled. Unfortunately, anyone could simply use such a code as a marketing ploy. It, too, could be misused.

Discussion about a Code of Ethics turns into a heated discussion, it has before and still is. It feels too much like politics and religion. I vote as an independent and see both sides to many issues and find many of the issues are not issues for me. I’m a Christian but don’t push or advertise such as part of my offering. Actually, I’m embarrassed by how some operate. I read a comment about how some use Christianity as part of their marketing. ugh… Others would use a Code of Ethics as part of their marketing. This, too, is snake oil, not SEO. Politics and religion are not SEO either!

Bottom line, I’m going quiet on this topic. I respect those who are following their own SEO Code of Ethics and walking their talk. Comments closed.

Don’t Be Obsessed with Search Engines

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Optimize your website for searchers and not specifically for the search engines. Search engine robots and spiders will visit your site. They’ll crawl around, but they won’t buy anything or contact you.

Most Search Engine Marketers (SEMs) hear a version of the following:

“Can you get me to #1 in Google?”

“How much would it cost to be in the top 3 on Google?”

“How much does it cost to submit my site to the search engines?”

Blogging a Journey in Online Marketing, finally!

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Pixel Position dot com once displayed services for SEO and eCommerce Development and has FINALLY been “remodeled.” Dana Lookadoo, founder and Conversational Marketer with Pixel Position, has revamped the site to help companies engage with customers using various Conversational SEO Strategies.

It’s taken some time to implement the proper blog theme with WordPress on a reliable hosting platform. We made some mistakes and lost previous blog databases and indexed pages (OUCH for someone in SEO). Those who know about Pixel Position know that clients come first. This means that working on one’s own site is often second or third on the list.

It’s too easy to be like the car mechanic who doesn’t work on his/her own car! We’ll share the journey to get this blog live as well.

Pixel Position Site Goals

The goal of Pixel Position is to provide a place to have a conversation about marketing strategies – from A to Z and back. Strategies, tips and tools for marketing your products and services (and even yourself) online will be featured. Topics will include:

  • Conversational SEO & Online Marketing Strategies
  • Search Engine Optimization, Social Media and the world of Web 2.0.
  • Ways to be productive, ways to use Zoho productivity tools and Google Apps. (Guess that’s Z to GA?)

It’s time to get going, again…blogging again! It’s great to dedicate time to others and to serving clients, but it’s finally time to launch this journey in Online Marketing. Get on board! You’ll learn tips, tools and resources to market your products, services and your people! Your ticket is free. No refunds. No guarantees! Travel at your own risk.

The goal of the journey is to show you how to “Engage Customers with Online Marketing!”
